Today, I want to take you on a delicious journey to Taichung, where a local delicacy called Taichung Rou Yuan has been winning hearts for generations. Established way back in 1933, this eatery is a true legend when it comes to authentic flavours.
Picture this: a scrumptious treat that’s both delicious and easy on the wallet. That’s what you get at Taichung Rou Yuan. This place has even caught the attention of the Michelin Guide, bagging a Bib Gourmand award for its outstanding culinary experience.
What is Taiwanese rou yuan?
Forget about those ordinary meatballs you’re used to. Taiwanese rou yuan, also known as bak wan, is a whole new ball game. Instead of being round, it takes on a disk shape with a special dough made of sweet potato flour and rice flour. This gives it a sticky, chewy texture that you’ll absolutely love. Inside, you’ll find a tasty meat filling, served with sweet sauce and soy paste. Oh, and before it reaches your plate, the bak wan takes a steamy dip in oil.
Menu
Taichung Rou Yuan’s menu is short and sweet, featuring only three items: meatballs, fish ball soup, and mung bean noodle (dong fen) soup. Unfortunately, the cost of ingredients has risen, resulting in a price increase of NT$5 for the meatballs, which now cost NT$45.
Rou Yuan 肉圓
The skin of the rou yuan had a slightly gelatinous texture and was sticky and chewy. This differed from the rou yuan I had tasted before, as those had skins similar to crystal dumplings that were more firm and dry. I personally preferred the softer and moister texture of the skin at Taichung Rou Yuan.
The meat filling was delectable and included spring onions and bamboo shoots. The combination of the meat filling with the sweet and savoury sauces was moreish.
Fish Ball Soup 魚丸湯
The broth was light, refreshing, and tasted naturally delicious, with a hint of pepper flavor. The fish balls in the soup were soft and bouncy, and didn’t have an overpowering fishy taste.
Final thoughts
In a nutshell, Taichung Rou Yuan is a true gem for rou yuan lovers and food enthusiasts alike. The traditional cooking methods used in this eatery create a one-of-a-kind experience for anyone looking to try authentic Taiwanese cuisine. Whether you’re a local or a curious tourist, make sure to add Taichung Rou Yuan to your foodie itinerary. It’s a must-visit spot that will satisfy your cravings and leave you wanting more.
