After all that blogging I’ve done for my Hanoi travels, it’s inevitable that I’ll have strong cravings for Vietnamese food. Since I was too lazy to go home and cook, I thought I would just grab takeaways from So Pho at Novena Square as that was the only Vietnamese restaurant that came to my mind, which was located in the area.
Everything was packed nicely in disposable bento boxes with plastic cutleries provided. Food was still warm by the time I brought them home.
This was their Bento Set A: Vietnamese Fried Rice served with Prawn Summer Roll and Prawn Cake with Sugar Cane (S$14.80).
The rice paper rolls had prawns, luncheon meat, rice vermicelli, cucumber, carrot and lettuce in them. Loved the crunch but it tasted bland so would have to dip into the sweet chilli sauce provided.
The green mango salad was crunchy and refreshing – nicely seasoned too.
I enjoyed the prawn cake on sugar cane which wasn’t the meaty type but was quite springy in texture. Could even chew on the sweet sugarcane after finishing the prawn cake. Nice.
The fried rice resembled a Thai pineapple rice. Very oily and a bit bland. There were small bits of prawns, squids, pineapples and red peppers in it – not much though.
The Fresh Noodle with Grilled Beef & Spring Rolls (S$10.80) came with the same sweet chilli sauce as the bento set. Would have been better if this was served with nuoc cham (fish sauce based dipping sauce) instead like the real Bun Cha. Though the beef was supposed to be grilled, they looked like they had been blanched or lightly stir fried instead. No signs of charred edges or smoky flavour. I loved the fried spring rolls that had beef in them – quite tasty though they were no longer crispy.
All prices indicated were before 7% GST which was applicable for takeaways.

Overall, the food wasn’t spectacular and it was definitely no where close to what I had in Vietnam of course. But for a change from the usual food I would always get for takeaways, it was still not a bad choice. Couldn’t totally satisfy my craving but I could just make do with this as it would be difficult to find authentic Vietnamese food in Singapore anyway.

Think cheaper to have your fix including takeaway at Nam Nam
I prefer Pho Street to Nam Nam. Both are definitely more value for money compared to this. Think I need to find a new place that serves up more true-blue Viet cuisine.
