I got to know about Kim Heng (HK) Roasted Delights while watching a travel vlog on YouTube and I realised this roasted meat stall was actually located in the same coffee shop that I would always pass by when getting a bus home from NEX. Last month, I stopped by Serangoon Central as Teochew Meat Puff had set up stall at a pasar malam there so I thought I would also swing by Kim Heng for lunch.
The roast pork crackling had a resounding crunch when bitten into. There wasn’t any fats underneath the skin and the meat tasted quite dry. The crackling was on the salty side but the meat was bland and it was obviously missing the 5-spice flavour too.
The roast duck came in a miserable portion with mostly boney parts and little meat. Didn’t have much flavour either.
The char siew was very lean with no fats and the meat was quite dry. The worst thing about it was that it tasted bland as well which was really ‘amazing’ because the not-so-great char siews that I had eaten in the past at least had some sort of caramelised honey and/or smoky flavour. This had none.
It seemed like they had run out of salt and spices when they were roasting their meats because everything was just insipid.
All in all, I think this place is over-rated and the food here is also over-priced. Before this, Kay Lee was on my bottom list. Now, Kim Heng has toppled Kay Lee to claim the last spot. I still prefer Fatty Cheong and seriously, even the hawker stall (Ho Bee Roasted Food) in my neighbourhood that sees crazy long queues everyday is way better than this. I’m not coming back. ??

Couldn’t agree with you more. I was disappointed as well after reading so many rave reviews. I noticed something was not right when there was practically no Q when I was there. Good to know you are honest in your review. Not many food bloggers are.
Thanks for your kind comment. Taste is always very subjective so we may have to take food posts with a pinch of salt sometimes. 🙂
