After spending the morning at Penang Hill where we enjoyed a cool respite from the hot weather, we headed to Hot Bowl White Curry Mee @ Jalan Rangoon for lunch. Yes, you read it right. It is white curry mee, which is a unique dish that Penang has.
We were here at peak lunch time and the restaurant was filled with office lunch crowd. Managed to get a table just as a group was leaving.
Menu
Hot Bowl White Curry Mee doesn’t just specialise in curry noodles. They have a decent selection of other main dishes such as –
- soup noodle (hor fun, vermicelli, etc) with chicken meatballs
- steamed chicken rice
- Ipoh hor fun
as well as side dishes like vinegar pork trotters, braised chicken feet, loh bak and more.
Customise your white curry mee
What I like about the curry mee here is that you can customise it to what you want or do not want. You can have it kosong (with bean sprouts only), without duck blood or without squids & cockles. All the different options are listed in the menu so just go for the combination you like. You can also add extra ingredients like prawns, chicken gizzards, crab sticks, fried fish balls, pork meat balls and more.
Steamed Chicken Rice
The steamed chicken was good! Sauce was salty and savoury. Very tasty. Chicken was moist too. That side bowl of chicken soup was very rich and sweet with chicken flavour.
Pity, the rice was subpar though as it didn’t have much flavour.
White Curry Mee
Definitely the ‘whitest’ curry mee I’ve ever seen, lol. It’s so different from the other curry mee I’ve had at Tuai Pui Curry Mee or Sister Curry Mee. Very fragrant coconut milk flavour.
I ordered my curry mee with just tau pok and cuttlefish. The Large portion was quite big in size.
Gotta spice things up
On every table, you’d find this bowl of chilli paste which you could add into the white curry mee just to spice things up. One tablespoonful was more than enough as the broth turned out choking hot but very shiok to eat. What I would suggest is to start with little chilli paste and slowly add and adjust the flavour and spiciness level.
I must say, this curry mee was the best curry mee I had in Penang. Even better than the famous ones I tried earlier. Particularly loved the tau pok that fully absorbed all that broth.
Final thoughts
If you haven’t tried white curry mee before, then you definitely have to come to Hot Bowl White Curry Mee as their version is really aromatic and fragrant. Best thing is, you can customise your own bowl with your favourite toppings. And the price is very reasonable too. Must try!
