Permas City is brimming with fantastic finds. We enjoyed a delicious fish and chips meal at Edward’s Urban Fish & Chips. Then, we were lucky to stumble upon Bunga Raya Popiah, famous for its crispy pork lard popiah from Malacca. And just around the corner, we found Happiness Wheel Cake. After reading all those great reviews on XHS, we couldn’t resist grabbing some pancakes to try.
Happiness Wheel Cake boasts over 10 outlets across Malaysia. For specific locations, you can check out their website.
Menu
Their wheel cakes come in around 30 different flavours, from traditional fillings to savoury options and even ice cream.
Besides that, they’ve got Taiwanese Mee Sua, grass jelly desserts, shaved ice treats, and a bunch of teas and smoothies.
I thought the prices for the wheel cakes were a bit steep compared to local standards.
They had a deal where if you bought 5, you got 1 free, and they even threw in a free gift—a pretty nice lunch bag.
All the wheel cakes were made to order, so there was a bit of a wait. And like everyone’s saying on social media, they’re super generous with the filling—just look at those big scoops! Maybe that’s why they’re pricier than other places’ wheel cakes.
Here’s what we tried:
Chicken Floss Cheese
Eating it hot gives you that awesome cheese pull, which is pretty satisfying. But the chicken floss was kinda off—it had a weird texture and tasted artificial.
Even those vegetarian floss I get back home is better. The whole thing was dry and not very enjoyable. The crust of the wheel cake was nothing special either.
Salty Egg Red Bean
You could tell the red bean paste was handmade because it still had whole beans in it, which was nice. It wasn’t too sweet, but it was a bit bland and boring overall.
Salty Egg Yam
Felt like eating mooncake. The homemade yam paste wasn’t too sweet, but like the red bean, it was dry and lacked flavour.
Chicken Floss Yam
The chicken floss tasted weird and the yam paste was dry and bland. Meh.
Cai Poh Chicken
The cai poh tasted strange—not like the cai poh I’m used to in chwee kueh or fried carrot cake. I can’t even describe the taste of this.
Orleans Chicken Cheese
This was the best of the bunch. It was savoury and flavorful with well-marinated chicken and stringy cheese.
Final Thoughts
Overall, it’s pretty pricey even with the buy-5-get-1-free deal. It’s almost as expensive as Mr Bean in Singapore. But at least Mr Bean’s fillings are more flavourful and moist. While these wheel cakes look like a good deal with lots of filling, if they’re dry and bland, it’s kinda pointless.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t for us.
