Whenever I go back to UK with the husband, one of the first things I’ll do is to head to Tesco to grab a box of my favourite Fresh Cream & Belgian Chocolate Choux Buns. Those are utterly delicious! When back in Singapore, I often lament the non-existence of a good choux bun in Singapore until a friend recommended me to try the BEST cream puff from Flourish Pastries. Filled with curiosity and a little skepticism, I made my way down to Tanjong Pagar to check out this little takeaway outlet on the 2nd level of Tanjong Pagar Plaza.
Tangy Lemon Tart $3.80 and Classic Cream Puff $2.80
There were a few tables and chairs outside the shop so I decided to have my pastries on the spot. The Classic Cream Puff looked like the same from Beard Papa’s. The cream was flavoured with dried vanilla beans as the flavour tasted really clean and fresh and I spotted little black speckles of vanilla too. Its consistency was really smooth which I liked. Rich and creamy but not overly sweet. The puff itself was also tasty on its own with a fragrant ‘baked smell’ (just like wok hei for char kway teow). It was firm and crispy on the outside but soft and airy on the inside. Thumbs up!
The lemon tart tasted slightly more sour than sweet but not in an overwhelming way which was good. The tart shell was also crumbly and buttery though it was a little tough. I wished the texture of the lemon curd was a little more runny like the one I had at The Landing Point, Fullerton Bay Hotel but in terms of taste, this was better as the tanginess of the lemon was more balanced out here.
Flourish Pastries is truly a hidden gem in Tanjong Pagar and is also now my to-go place for puff pastries whenever the craving strikes me. Prices are reasonable. Service is also warm and friendly. There’s nothing that I don’t like about this place. Worth checking out for its quiches and cakes too.
