After our massage at Bangkok Family Spa in Masai, Johor, we took Grab and headed over to Edward’s Urban Fish & Chips. We’d seen tons of rave reviews on Xiaohongshu, and since we’d been craving some good fish and chips for a while, we couldn’t pass up the chance.
Discovering Permas City
The Edward’s Urban Fish & Chips we visited is in the relatively new Permas City, which a local mentioned opened 6-7 months ago. When we got there, the complex was pretty quiet with lots of empty shop spaces. It’s a bit out of the way from JB city centre and there’s not much else around, but since we were heading to Plentong, it was on our way.
Other Locations
Besides the one at Permas City, Edward’s Urban Fish & Chips also has outlets at Mount Austin and Eco Galleria.
Ordering Made Easy
When you walk in, grab an empty table, then head to the counter to place your order and pay. They’ll bring the food to your table. It didn’t take too long for our food to arrive.
A Look at the Menu
The menu is straightforward and concise, all on one page so you can see everything at a glance. This is perfect for me since I always struggle with deciding what to order, haha.
For their fish and chips, they offer three types of fish: dory, perch, and barramundi. You can choose to have your fish either fried (classic) or grilled.
Our Tasty Picks
Homemade Mushroom Soup RM11.90
A clear winner from the start. You can tell it’s homemade at first glance, with its very thick and creamy consistency and a high mushroom-to-cream ratio, giving it a truly earthy, mushroomy flavour.
However, they shouldn’t put the toast on top as it gets soggy; it should be served on the side.
Barramundi Classic RM33.90
The barramundi came as one thick piece with firm, flaky flesh, similar to salmon.
It felt more like eating a fish steak than typical fish and chips. The darker parts of the flesh near the skin were quite fishy.
Batter was nice and not oily at all. Fries were also fresh-cut, not from a packet, and had a crispy outside with a fluffy inside. What really impressed me were the three sauces provided: the tartar sauce was superb with fries, and the green Thai seafood sauce and red chilli sauce were both piquant and appetising, cutting through the greasiness of the fried food.
Perch Classic RM26.90
The Perch Classic came with two big pieces.
I found the texture of perch ideal for fish and chips—softer and moister because the flesh is thinner, which means a thicker, crunchier, and more satisfying batter.
Final Thoughts
The prices mentioned above are before 10% service charge. Our total bill, including the service charge, worked out to RM79.95 (approximately S$23).
My husband said this was one of the best fish and chips he’s ever had. Coming from an Englishman who lived in the country of fish and chips, he said it was worth coming to JB just for this. It’s the first time he ever complimented a fish and chips dish!
The environment was nice—bright and not oily smelling. It’s a bit out of the way, but it’s easy to take a Grab anywhere in JB, so no issues at all. As I write this, I find myself craving another round of their delectable fish and chips. If you share a passion for this classic dish, Edward’s Urban Fish & Chips is a must-visit spot in JB!
