I had some leftover panko breadcrumbs from the tonkatsu I made earlier which I thought would be a waste if I threw them away so I decided to make some onion rings with them. I don’t normally use panko for onion rings (click here for my usual onion rings recipe) but there’s always a first time in my kitchen. Surprisingly, these onions rings were finger-licking good! So darn crispy and uber addictive! The husband and I were fighting over them, lol :p The perfect movie snack at home!
Crispy Onion Rings in Panko Breadcrumbs Recipe
Ingredients (serves 2)
1/2 cup plain flour
1/2 cup water
1 egg
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
freshly cracked black pepper
1 large onion, sliced into rings
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
1. Whisk all ingredients (except onion and panko) in a large bowl.
2. Dip the onion rings into the batter and lightly coat with panko breadcrumbs.
3. Deep fry in hot oil till golden brown and crispy. Drain on kitchen towels to remove excess oil.
4. Serve with a dip of your choice.
I actually coat the onion rings with panko only because I wanted to use up the leftovers. Otherwise, you can just fry them straightaway after dipping into the batter. Try both ways and see which one you like 🙂
