I’ve long heard about the cafes at Bukit Merah Central that have garnered raving reviews on social media but it’s a part of Singapore that I don’t really come to often because it’s quite out of the way for me. When I was at IKEA Alexandra the other day, I thought I’d just swing by the area for a cafe-hopping adventure, only to find 2 of the cafes that I wanted to visit closed even though it was only early evening and there weren’t any closure notices on their FB pages. o_O
Thank goodness it wasn’t a wasted trip because I spotted ButterScotch Cafe that was still alive with customers in the almost deserted neighbourhood.
ButterScotch mainly specialises in coffees and desserts like waffles, churros, pavlova, souffle and french toast. It also offers a small selection of savoury eats like chicken chop, chilli crab cake burger, eggs benedict, truffle fries, buffalo wings, etc. Do note this cafe is not halal-certified but it’s Muslim-owned.
I ordered a Iced Peppermint Mocha (S$7.50)…
…that was quite thick and rich with a subtle mint flavour. I liked the extra touch of chocolate sauce at the bottom of the glass that gave a nice aromatic cocoa flavour.
And this was the Ondeh Ondeh Waffles (S$12) which was the real highlight of my evening.
When it was served to my table, I could immediately get a whiff of a fragrant ondeh ondeh/pandan smell. The texture of the waffle was like the Prima Deli style waffle pancake – moist and cakey but with a crispy crust. And it had an intense pandan flavour too. The accompanying gula melaka ice cream was a perfect match with the waffle – neither too sweet nor too cloying – with a deep aroma of palm sugar. The desiccated coconut gave a nice crunch to the dessert. Overall – my two thumbs up for this! Highly recommended. It’s an exact replica of a good ondeh ondeh except in a waffle form. Ingenious!
Will definitely be back again to try their other desserts that seem equally inviting. How does a Bomb Alaska or Butterscotch Souffle sound? 😉

Ohh, what a feast! I can only imagine the taste of the waffle. I’ve only used pandan leaves when cooking rice. Now, I have a good excuse to buy more. Thanks.
