When it comes to fish & chips, Fish & Co. has always been my preferred choice since my college days more than a decade ago which is also one of the few casual dining restaurants in Singapore that I would keep going back on a regular basis. Though I’ve seen and known about Boston Seafood Shack for a long time, I’ve never been tempted to give it a try perhaps because I haven’t heard of very positive reviews from fellow foodies.
A while back, the husband bought a Boston Seafood Shack deal on Groupon that entitled us to 2 Crispy Dory Fish & Chips at S$17.50 (regular price was S$30.36). I was surprised he did that because we always had that impression that most of the F&B establishments (with some exceptions) that are selling deals on deal websites are probably not doing too well and that’s why they would need ‘cheap’ deals and discounts to attract more customers. We obviously fell for it, lol.
We went to their outlet at Great World City on a Saturday late afternoon for an early dinner.
Absolutely quiet. Our table was the only one occupied.
Redemption was a breeze. We were speedily brought to our table after showing one service staff a print-out of our deal coupon and we were handed the menu to select one sauce each for our fish & chips.
It didn’t take too long for our fish & chips to arrive. Beautifully presented and served with a pile of chips, a dollop of coleslaw and dipping sauce. The chips were freshly fried to crisp and tasted just like the usual frozen ones out of a bag but they needed just a little more salt for flavour. The coleslaw was crunchy but pretty much middle-of-the-road stuff. I liked how flaky and moist the dory fish fillets were but the batter totally did injustice to them. It tasted bland and perhaps because it was fried for too long, it was quite tough and oily to bite into it.
I picked the Singapore Chilli Crab Sauce that was uninspiring and nowhere near our local authentic concoction. It was a bit watered-down and tasted more tangy like a tomato-based pasta sauce. The Kampung Salted Egg Sauce fared slightly better with its thick and creamier texture though it still lacked that intense salted egg aroma.
This Groupon dining deal was indeed a steal but despite that, we weren’t too impressed with the food as nothing actually stood out or tempted us to return.
