After making Oriental Sausage Rolls last week, I thought of using the remaining puff pastry sheets for something else. Something bacon-y and cheesy like these Bacon Cheese Rolls. Some of you probably know these as pinwheels. 😉
They resembled mini pizzas because I had brushed tomato paste onto the pastry sheets before adding the toppings.
Bacon Cheese Rolls or Pizzas?
There you go. If you pop this right into the oven, you can also make a puff pastry pizza. Yum. I added lots of spring onions just to give that extra fragrance and freshness.
Rolling Good Times
Thanks J for lending me your fingers. 😆
Just roll up the whole thing from one end while using your fingers to tuck in the toppings. Slice the roll into thick slices and proceed to bake. 🙂
The finished product. Irresistibly delicious. Don’t you want to take a bite?
I did the baking in two batches with different oven temperatures.
The first attempt wasn’t great as the bottom of the pastry became burnt (right) when I baked at 200 deg C for 15 minutes. Surprisingly, J loved them burnt so nothing went to waste. 😀
For the second round, I lowered the temperature to 180 deg C. Baked the pastries for 10 minutes before increasing the temperature to 200 deg C and baking them for another 5 minutes till golden brown. The Bacon Cheese Rolls came out perfect. Golden brown on the outside and moist on the inside.
Pinwheels and Rolls
Tried to do a different variation too. Instead of slicing the rolled up pastry into slices to make pinwheels, I baked the entire roll. Didn’t look as presentable (oops, haha) but I loved the texture of the cheese inside that was stringy and oh-so-delicious. For this, you would have to bake at 180 deg C for 15 minutes first before increasing the temperature to 200 deg C and baking for another 5 minutes.
Whichever way you do it, I guarantee these Bacon Cheese Rolls will be a really delectable treat for the whole family. 😉 Enjoy!
