The husband and I have been regularly patronising Ayam Penyet Ria @ Lucky Plaza for years whenever we have craving for smashed fried chicken but have never been to Ayam Penyet President (both are separate entities) that also has an outlet in the same building.
When we spotted another one of the latter’s outlets at Kallang Wave Mall (next to Stadium MRT Station on the Circle Line), we thought of just giving it a try and see if it’s as good as our usual choice.
Let’s take a look at the menu (click on image to enlarge):
Prices are reasonable (inclusive of GST with no service charge) with a good variety of chicken, beef, seafood, vegetable and soup dishes.
When you’re ready with your order, just make payment at the counter and food will be delivered to your table.
We helped ourselves to complimentary servings of home-style vegetable soup that was in a warmer pot next to the ordering counter.
The Gado-Gado (S$5.90) came doused in a thick and creamy peanut sauce with plenty of belinjo crackers on top. There were blanched cabbage, bean sprouts, potato chunks, kang kong, ketupat rice and a hard-boiled egg in this salad. What a shame, there wasn’t any tempeh. The sauce was flavoursome but could do with a bit less sugar as it was just a little on the sweeter side.
The Tahu Telor (S$6.50) was deliciously fried to a crisp on the outside while the beancurd inside remained moist and tender. For the price, I thought the portion was rather small.
You can either dip the tahu telor into the accompanying peanut sauce or just pour it all over like what we did. This sauce was a little watered down and wasn’t as robust as the one from The Rice Table Indonesian Restaurant which we really liked.
This Ayam Cabe Ijo or Chicken in Green Chilli (S$6.80) was the real highlight of our meal.
The chicken leg was fried to perfection – crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I loved those crispy topping bits that really gave a good crunch. The green chilli was mixed with crispy fried anchovies and was packed with a spicy punch that tingled the tongue. It’s a must to pair every bite of the chicken with the green chilli concoction cos’ it’s just uber shiok to eat them together. Highly recommended dish.
Note: This is a halal-certified restaurant.
