Since A&W’s exit from Singapore in 2003, I’m sure many Singaporeans like myself who had grown up with one of our favourite childhood fast food chains must be craving for its root beer floats, waffles, coney dogs and curly fries for a long time. Though they might not be the best tasting in the whole of Singapore, there’s just something about A&W that the other fast food outlets can’t beat. Perhaps we have only learnt to appreciate the value of something after we lose it. There used to be an A&W restaurant in Ang Mo Kio Central. To me, it wasn’t just an outlet for junk food but it was also a hangout/chill-out place where I had spent many after-school hours back in the 80s and 90s.
Fortunately, it is still possible to satisfy that long-awaited craving. But the only issue is, we would have to get out of Singapore and head across the Causeway to Johor. And the nearest A&W outlet is located at AEON Bukit Indah Shopping Centre which is approximately a 40-minute bus journey from CIQ/JB Sentral. I don’t remember if I’ve ever had an A&W burger as I always went for the same stuffs that I liked.
Prices were very reasonable after currency exchange.
The husband and I had all of these for just RM23.50 which was about S$7.74 based on today’s exchange rate. This is a beef coney dog set (RM12.85) upsized to large (+RM1.35) and we changed the regular root beer to a double scoops root beer float (+RM2.20) and added on a waffle with butter and syrup (RM7.10).
Everything was as good as I remembered. The coney dog was delicious! Juicy sausage with a snap wrapped in a soft, pillowy bun and topped with a tasty meat sauce and crunchy onions. The curly fries with that distinctive seasoning really brought back fond memories but I wished they were more hot and crispy. I absolutely loved the classic waffle that was made fresh on the spot; it had a nice kick of salt and was crispy on the outside and airy on the inside. The root beer float was so comforting especially when almost-melting soft serve paired with almost-creamy root beer slided down the throat – absolutely yum.

Hi ?. I love a&w, too. Really miss their food. I always go to their restaurants when I visit Malaysia.
I think now is the best time for A&W to return to Singapore cos’ its customer base in Singapore has grown tremendously!
